Savoring Seclusion at Eagle Island in Coastal Georgia - by Melissa Adams
If you researched “secluded escape” on the Internet, you might find what I experienced at Eagle Lodge, a private hideaway off Georgia’s scenic coast accessible only by boat. With my watch set to “Eagle time,” I was amongst a handful of writers on a secluded island, free to pursue personal pleasures. While Elizabeth soaked in the hot tub, Leigh daydreamed on the outdoor swinging bed, Lisa shucked fresh oysters plucked from island traps, Amanda recovered from kayaking amidst ‘gators and John filed stories on the Internet. Mint julep in hand, I decompressed with a novel, inhaling coastal breezes and spying bald eagles return to their nest in the marine forest’s tall pines. We’d savored “low country boil,” a one-pot Southern stew prepared with local seafood, potatoes, onions, corn-on-the-cob and sausage, served on newspaper for easy clean-up. As we readied for a bonfire illuminated by shooting stars, I asked, “What time is it?” And then I thought, “Does it matter?” www.privateislandsofgeorgia.com
